Here's my final evaluation sheet. I wasn't too surprised at my scores because it is common for employers to rate straight fours, but I was kind of surprised that I didn't score any 5's. The comment at the end about my shyness was good for me to see because it validated for me that I did show that I was more comfortable as time went on and that I can work on being more confident sooner. While it is interesting to see a raw survey of my performance at the office, it doesn't mean that much to me. I know that everyone around the office really enjoyed having me there. I was treated with nothing but kindness and respect throughout my internship, and on my last day, they got me a card and a cake and we had a sort of farewell party for me. It was so thoughtful of them! I couldn't have asked for a better placement for the final trimester.

Things are beginning to wrap up at my internship. Everyone around the office keeps asking when my last day is since I keep bringing in papers and cookies and that sort of thing. They are all sad to see me go, which makes me happy that I was appreciated and making a difference there. I am very excited to work there in the summer! As my internship ends, Dave is making me more and more , confident that the job is mine, which is amazing! I was thinking of finding another job this summer, but this one was almost handed to me, and I am very, very grateful for the opportunities I have gotten from this class. I even grabbed an application for my friend for a summer job, so I might get to work with her this summer, too!
This week I continued to shadow the techs and learn more about physical therapy. Monday was very slow, so my coworker Megan and I mostly played sudoku and waited around for patients. On Thursday, it was much busier. I did the normal stuff, like making beds, restocking sheets and pillowcases, and setting up hot packs. I am getting more comfortable doing newer things like getting the heat and cool packs ready for the techs to place on the patients. One of the therapists tried to tell me how to specifically set up one patient, but then realized that I wasn't even a tech! Since my internship is ending, I'm hoping that I will get the summer job more and more, (p.s. to candela: this picture isn't sending but I promise I'll come in tomorrow to show you! also maybe to have you sign some paperwork for me :) This week, I had a normal shift on Monday and I went to a staff meeting on Thursday. Everyone at the practice was at a meeting, learning how to use the new computer systems during my shift, so I got to go too. I watched and learned how the system works and got to see how comfortable all of the therapists and technicians were to voice their questions and opinions. It was cool for me to see how comfortable everyone was with each other. Recently, I asked Dave, who owns the practice, about turning my internship into a summer job, and at one point in the meeting when talking about giving everyone logins, Dave said "not today, but soon Natalie!", so hopefully this is a good sign that I'll get the job! On Thursday this week, I got to learn how to use the ultrasound machine! The techs that I work with sometimes use a special ultrasound machine when the therapist requests it. I've only seen them use it a few times in my month there, so I knew I was interested in watching one be performed and learning all about the process. The one technician, Sue, showed me how to give one, and taught me some of the science behind the way the ultrasound works, like why it doesn't produce pictures like a typical ultrasound does. She even showed me how it felt on my arm! It was really cool to learn about that, especially since I might use it if I get a summer job there! This week I am getting more comfortable around the office with my duties and learning tons more about physical therapy. The techs have been giving me more responsibilities, such as taking hot and cold packs off of patients, which means interacting with them more. I love the office because it is so much fun! They love holidays and decorate for all kinds of events, like Mr. Bones here dressed for Easter! I had to miss Tigers Day because of Spring Break and I was sad about that because it seemed like it would be really fun. It's a great work environment and I'm very happy that I chose to continue the program here. This week I started at my new placement, David Gilboe and Associates Physical Therapy office. I started by shadowing one of the therapists and seeing what he does on a daily basis. It was really cool seeing all the different duties he had to accomplish in just a short time span. Then I got to work with the technicians, who do anything from make beds to give therapeutic ultrasounds! I included a picture of part of the tech's station, which shows where the hot pack covers dry and heat up. By the end of my second shift, I was making beds for the patients and helping the techs whenever I could. I am very excited to see how this trimester goes!
This was my last week in the NICU, and it wasn't very out of the ordinary. I did the same things that I have been doing all trimester long, and it was a little sad when I left knowing that I wouldn't be coming back. I did get the chance to have a quick chat with one of the head nurses, Laura. She asked if I had any suggestions to make my job easier or more efficient, and I told her that adding a button to open the door would be a great idea, since the way I have to go around the families after opening the door for them can be awkward. I will really miss spending my Friday afternoons in the peace and quiet of the NICU lounge.
I was a little surprised when I saw some of the scores that I received on my evaluation sheet, but then I realized that this is because my supervisor never really even saw me. Quite honestly, I'm not 100% sure that the woman I spoke to on Friday was Laura. That being said, I didn't really take my evaluation to heart, since I got marked down in categories such as "He/she demonstrates a positive attitude when interacting with patients/public clients". I know that if I was well supervised, my evaluation would have looked different. Still, I wish I would've gotten better ratings on my sheet, especially in the categories I was rated a 3 in. |
